My name is Dom and I work as a tax technology consultant at Deloitte in London. I hold a Masters degree in Finance (Finance and Investment) from Durham University Business School, graduating in 2018.

 

Why did you decide to study at Durham University?

Durham's excellent reputation and positive reviews drew me to study there. The university's rich history and welcoming city atmosphere further solidified my decision.

Tell us about your career path since graduation from Durham University?

My career began in a tax-focused role after graduation. While I enjoyed this work, I later transitioned to a more technology-centric position within the tax field.

What motivated you to choose your current/future field or industry? 

My passion for finance, combined with a love for problem-solving and exploring new technologies, naturally led me to a career in finance technology. This field perfectly merges my interests and skills.

What do you find most rewarding and challenging about your current role?

The dynamic nature of large-scale projects, each presenting unique challenges and rewards, is something I deeply enjoy. The ever-evolving landscape of tax legislation, while demanding, keeps me engaged and constantly learning, ensuring I stay current with the latest developments.

What skills or qualities do you think are most important for success in this field? 

Problem-solving abilities and the skill of effectively communicating complex problems and their solutions to clients in a clear and concise manner are essential.

Any interesting stories you would like to share from your time at Durham?

A particularly fond memory from my time at Durham was participating in a football tour with my college. I greatly appreciated the college system at Durham and the sense of community it fostered.

Is there anything that you know now that you wish you’d known when graduating?

A finance degree opens doors to a wide array of career paths. The skills gained are highly transferable, as my own unexpected journey into finance technology demonstrates. It is important to remember that no path is set in stone, and countless opportunities await.
