Senior Common Room

SCR and Students at Floreat Dinner pre-Drinks

We are an active and enthusiastic Senior Common Room with over 200 members, including College Officers, College Mentors, University administrative and academic staff, College alumni and members of the local community.

The SCR aims to promote the work of the College as a flourishing community of scholars, and also foster links between the College, its three common rooms (JCR, MCR and SCR), other college SCRs and the wider community.

Our SCR enables people who are not undergraduates or post-graduates to participate in the life of College, providing an effortless forum for cross-disciplinary engagement across all three common rooms. It enables our resident visiting fellows and professional and academic staff who are new to the University to gain a secure foothold and friendly community in which to network and become established.

A number of our members provide support to other members of College informally through offering careers advice and guidance and more formally through being College Mentors.

SCR Events

We have a varied programme of activities.

Events include dinners, talks, discussion evenings, walks and visits to places of interest. We also have a thriving book club.

Members are invited to sign up for College events including formal dinners, and to support student activity by attending student theatre, College concerts, College lectures and JCR and MCR-led events such as Hatfield Day and the Lion in Winter Ball.

During Michaelmas and Epiphany Term (Terms 1 and 2) “Formal” dinners are held usually once per week (Tuesdays or Fridays). The dates and themes of Formal meals are included in event emails sent to SCR members.

Sitting Room SCR

SCR Dinners are held in the SCR Dining Room once per term. In addition, “An Evening with” events are organised in which SCR members are invited to sign up for informal round table wine and cheese discussion evenings, once a term, attended by SCR and MCR members.

All of these events help to further the purpose of College bringing together people from different areas of work and experience to form a flourishing community of scholars exploring interests in a friendly community, sharing ideas as well as food and drink.
