Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the Department of Theology and Religion |
Biography
I am a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow working on the relationship between Christians and the theatre in Classical antiquity. My current project has a particular focus on the place of the three tragedians – Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides – in early Christian thought, but I work across the landscape of drama and performance in the Greco-Roman world. Before joining the department at Durham I completed my PhD in Classics at King's College London. My thesis focused on the writings of Clement of Alexandria, a late second-century Christian author who took a particular interest in the riches of Classical culture. I explored his use of dramatic themes and material, and the impact this had on his articulation and understanding of Christian doctrine.I continue to maintain an interest in Clement, and have a number of published or forthcoming pieces exploring his relationship with Greco-Roman culture in the second century.
