Professor Simon Hogg, Emeritus Professor in our Department of Engineering, has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng).
This prestigious honour recognises his outstanding contributions to the engineering profession throughout a remarkable career in both industry and academia.
Professor Hogg’s career spans decades of leadership and innovation.
Before joining Durham in 2010, he worked at ALSTOM’s power division, where he was instrumental in growing its global steam turbine retrofit business to €600 million a year.
He led a team of 150 engineers across the UK, Poland, and India, driving forward new turbine designs and technologies.
At Durham, Professor Hogg focused on renewable energy and energy storage research, helping to shape the University’s curriculum to inspire the next generation of engineers.
He served as Head of our Engineering Department for over five years and as Executive Director of the Durham Energy Institute.
For a decade, he also managed our partnership with Ørsted, supporting the company’s transition to green energy.
Professor Hogg has been a strong advocate for renewable energy in the North East of England.
He leads the Innovation Group of Energi Coast, the region’s offshore wind cluster, helping to strengthen ties between the University, industry, and local communities.
His work continues to support the region’s green growth strategy and the development of sustainable energy solutions.
Each year, up to 60 engineers are elected to the RAEng Fellowship, which brings together some of the most accomplished engineers in the UK.
Fellows work to build a sustainable society and promote inclusive economic growth.
Professor Hogg said: “Being elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering is, without doubt, the highlight of my professional career.
“I am indebted to Durham University and my previous employers in industry and academia, who have provided me with the opportunities to develop my engineering and leadership skills.
“My election to FREng is recognition of the trust that they have placed in me. I will work to further strengthen links between the University and RAEng as Emeritus Professor as well as supporting the Academy to establish their new NE Enterprise Hub following its announcement earlier in the year.”
