Want to know more about how we interact with our local community? Our monthly Community Newsletter explores the news, events, and research both at Durham University and in the city itself.

We’re approaching the end of the 2024/25 academic year, with exams from Monday 12 May to Friday 6 June, and graduations from Wednesday 2 July to Wednesday 9 July.

In May's newsletter, we celebrate a truly historic and joyous occasion with the visit of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla for the Royal Maundy Service.

In addition, the new Business School location officially opened, and we joined local partners to launch the 'Durham Story.'

Upcoming events in your community

There’s plenty of events to enjoy in and around the University and Durham City this month and next, and we spotlight some of these in the newsletter.

They include the annual Botanic Garden Fun Day, as well as our new Shakespeare Recovered Exhibition at Palace Green Library. This exhibition tells the story of the Folio's theft and our conservation team's work to restore it.

Research spotlight

Our staff continue to conduct impactful research. Our archaeologists excavated the Melsonby Hoard, one of the largest and most important Iron Age finds in the UK.

Researchers from our Department of Theology and Religion reflected on Pope Francis' lasting legacy, and the Leverhulme Centre for Algorithmic Life was named one of three winners of the 2025 Leverhulme Research Centre competition.
