Laura Chuhan Campbell has been awarded a Leverhulme Research Fellowship for her project entitled 'In the Beginning: Re-creating the Creation Story in Medieval French Translations' for academic year 2025/26.
Laura's project takes novel approaches in Translation Studies, which decentre the linguistic bias of translation, and uses them to re-examine the mediation of the creation story for medieval French lay audiences. The creation story was an important source of cultural and pedagogical ideas in the Middle Ages, yet its significance for understanding the history of translation has been underestimated by theories that prioritise linguistic translation over other intermedial forms. This study re-evaluates the historical and literary value of medieval French Bibles by reframing translation of the creation story in terms of the interaction between verbal, iconographic, performative, and experiential representations.
