Michael Dixon BGA Masters Prize 2024

We are delighted to announce that Michael Dixon, an MEng graduate, has been awarded the 2024 British Geotechnical Association Masters Dissertation Prize.

Michael's dissertation was entitled "Seepage in Unsaturated Soils Understanding Flow in Landfill Covers" and was carried out under the supervision of Dr Marti Lloret-Cabot at the Department of Engineering of Durham University. The research explores the use of unsaturated soil mechanics to demonstrate the potential of Capillary Barrier Systems (CBSs) as sustainable and economic solutions to prevent (or limit) rainfall infiltration into the underlying soil, thus preventing slope instabilities.
A short presentation was given by Michael at the BGA’s Annual Conference on 25 June 2025, held at ICE, where his success was formally acknowledged.
