Your Health
At Durham University, we take the health and wellbeing of our students very seriously. On this page, there is some advice and guidance regarding alcohol, drugs and sexual health, but you can find information on many other aspects of health and wellbeing on our Student Support & Wellbeing pages.
We encourage all students coming to Durham to register with the University and Claypath Medical Group, its free and easy to do and means you will receive the medical care you need if you are unwell.
Alcohol and Drugs
The University works with the County Durham Drug and Alcohol Recovery Service to offer support and education for our students and staff. If you have concerns about drug or alcohol-related issues, you can email CDDARS.uni@waythrough.org.uk This email account is specifically for the use of members of the Durham University community.
The University also offers drop-in sessions with specialist counsellors from the County Durham Drug & Alcohol recovery Service. These take place every Thursday in term time, 12pm-3pm, in the Palatine Centre room PC063b. If you can not make the drop-in but would still like an appointment with one of the counsellors, students and staff can email CDDARS.uni@waythrough.org.uk for a one to one appointment on campus.
Our new Drug & Alcohol Practitioner offers Roadshows in colleges, speak to your college office to find out when yours is or email studentwellbeing.office@durham.ac.uk to arrange one.
If you're drinking alcohol on a night out, do drink responsibly. Eat before you go out and drink plenty of water or a soft drink between alcoholic drinks. Keep track of what you're drinking as well as how much. Don't leave your drink unattended.
Sexual Health
The Student Support and Wellbeing Directorate work in collaboration with the NHS County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust Sexual Health Team to provide C-Cards, Sexual Health Roadshows, resources and student signposting.
Part of this partnership has meant we are now able to offer students access to a Sexual Health Clinic ran by NHS nurses every Thursday, 10am-4pm, in term time at Maiden Castle. To make an appointment please call 0191 372 8700.
If you can not make the Thursday clinic for whatever reason St Margaret's Place offer appointments Mondays and Tuesdays, 9am till 7pm, appointments can be made by calling 0191 372 8700.
The NHS offer a range of online and by post Sexual Health Services students can access.
Current students can visit out internal Sexual Health pages.
It is beneficial that you are still registered with a Durham GP for your wellbeing and to access medical help when you need it.
You can find all the information on how to do this on our Essential Medical Information page.
