Stephen Mills

Research scholarships in Earth Science

Having pursued an adventurous career travelling the world as a field geologist, Stephen J Mills (Geology, St Cuthbert’s Society, 1964), left a substantial gift in his will to the Department of Earth Sciences.  Stephen was known professionally and academically for his encyclopaedic knowledge of the world’s sedimentary basins, as well as his love of geology in general.

Part of Stephen’s gift created the Stephen Mills Scholarships for a Masters by Research in Earth Sciences, which funds two scholars annually to undertake academic research on a number of projects.

Being chosen as a recipient for this scholarship has personally been a source of pride and encouragement. It is a reminder that I follow in the footsteps of other MScR students from Durham University, and it is a great pleasure to also work towards contributing valuable research to both the university and to the field more widely.

The gift has kick-started the careers of our youngest academic staff just at the time when they most need help.
